Industry sources tell Billboard the album sold over 80,000 copies in three hours

The stealth Thursday evening (9 p.m PT) release of Beyonce's self-titled fifth solo studio set is likely headed towards a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 when that chart's top 10 is revealed on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

The iTunes exclusive "visual" album, retailing for $15.99 contains 14 tracks -- not available for a la carte purchases until Dec. 20 -- and 14 accompanying videos, along with other bonus video content. As of this morning, no set date has been announced for the CD release to physical retailers or of its availability on other digital download sites.

In just a three-hour sales window (closing at midnight Friday PT), "Beyonce" reportedly sold over 80,000 copies, according to industry sources. It's still too early to judge what the set will do over the full three days left in the sales tracking week (which ends Sunday night), but with prior projected leader, "Blame It All On My Roots: Five Decades Of Influences" by Garth Brooks, estimated to shift 150,000-160,000 units, Beyonce is already halfway to that sum. And in the time it would take someone to fly from New York to Miami.

The album release was so heavily guarded, that reportedly only a dozen or so members of her Sony Records family were even aware of the set being pushed to iTunes yesterday evening.

Beyonce's last studio set "4" sold 310,000 in its debut week in July of 2011, but that was with a full sales week and a marketing/media push leading up to the release. It is an interesting commentary on the influence of social media in today's world if "Beyonce" can come close to that sum with just social buzz driving the project instead of weeks of traditional media promotion normally part of the album release playbook.

Da zanemarimo da se radi o Beyonce na trenutak. Ovo je verovatno jedan od najpametnijih marketinških poteza koji je njen menadžerski tim mogao da smisli. Prošli su ti dani sa #1 singlovima očigledno za sve koji nisu starosne dobi između 15-25.

Odslušao sam album jutros i rekao - bože, koja dosada. Kasnije shvatiš da joj je ovo jedini kompletan album. Ne, nema hita. Nijedna od ovih pesama se neće vrteti na radio stanicama, nećemo ih viđati na top listama, ali je album njena verzija ispovesti. Sofisticirano upakovana u jednu "sad sam mama" / "sad sam seksi" kolekciju pesama koja je namenjena fanovima. Iskreno, kao celina funkcioniše. Istrgneš li ijednu pesmu osim "Haunted", sve pada u vodu.

I da, biće i drugi deo albuma.

It's a cheap way to get sales. No promotion, and when the hype is that you've released an album and EVERYONE is focusing on that fact, they'll go and buy it, especially since they couldn't preview it. She knew that if she did promos and released a single, it would be badly reviewed (which no one will say how bad the songs are, because they're impressed with the marketing of the album, so it eclipses the actual work..) and the sales would dip, on top of people anticipating it and just waiting to download it illegally / trying to leak it.

ne da su joj prosli osrednje, nego preloše (WRTW #29, BTINH #16, LOT #20 and C #70) ne znam da li je postojala zemlja u kojoj joj je neki singl bio #1, a toliko je forsirala Who Run The World i opet ništa.

ali za ovo joj svaka čast, pametan potez, vrhunski urađeno, spotovi su dobri stvarno...pesme onako, nista specijalno ( stare su joj mnogo bolje) Halo mi je njena najbolja pesma. Čija god da je ovo bila ideja fenomenalno. I mora se priznati Beyonce se najvise trudi i radi, ništa se ne prepušta slučaju, i promocija joj je uvek 100%...kao da je na početku.

Ipak su na kraju sertifikovani pristojno u USA i tu i tamo širom sveta, bez obzira na ne tako zavidnu poziciju na top listama. Računa se i broj nedelja koje provedu na top listama, ne samo najviše pozicije koje dostignu (često samo u jednoj/prvoj nedelji).

A mislim da je i taj njen album pregazio pristojno konkurenciju poput prethodnog albuma Britney, ako se već razbacujemo brojkama. Rihanni nije prismrdeo naravno :awesome:

Kad već pričamo o Rihanni, par spotova/pesama Beyonce čiji preview videh me neodoljivo podsećaju na Rihannine "cool" hip-hop numere (koje su često sranje)... smešno mi.

Kao što rekoh, nisam nikada bio veliki fan, ali ne može se poreći da je ovo ogroman uspeh. Žena se bliži stotoj zemlji u kojoj je na prvom mestu na iTunes-u, a nije ni 24 sata prošlo.

No, manimo to. Njeni low budget (ali ovoga puta estetski prihvatljivi spotovi-ne kao ona B'Day sranja) su bolji od 90% spotova koji su pušteni u protekle npr. 2 godine.

Ko god da joj je menadžer, zaslužuje poseban honorar za ovo :)

Beyonce shocked the music world recently by delivering a "surprise" new album just in time for the holiday season. Yet, the biggest surprise is the album's mediocrity.

Her eponymous fifth album might be the weakest offering in her catalog. It's not even as strong as 2011's "4," which fell far short from being an overall great album.

It's Official: Beyonce Makes History With Fifth No. 1 Album

It's official: Beyonce's new self-titled album debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, making her the first woman to hit No. 1 with her first five studio albums.

It follows the chart-topping "Dangerously In Love" (2003), "B'Day" (2006), "I Am... Sasha Fierce" (2008) and "4" (2011). All five of her albums also debuted at No. 1.

The two other acts that have taken their first five studio sets to No. 1: rapper DMX and folk group the Kingston Trio. (DMX also happens to be the only other act, aside from Beyonce, to debut at No. 1 with his first five studio efforts.)

"Beyonce" was released on the morning of Friday, Dec. 13 -- exclusively via the iTunes Store without any pre-release announcement -- and it sold 617,000 copies through the week ending Sunday, Dec. 15, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's a record high sales week for Beyonce, as the diva's previous best week came when "B'Day" bowed with 541,000.

iTunes is the exclusive seller of the album, released on Columbia Records, through at least Dec. 18. The physical version of the album should start to reach U.S. retailers sometime between Dec. 18 and 20. (The arrival day varies, depending on how far -- and fast -- the CDs travel from Sony's distribution center to retailers.)

"Beyonce" also notches the largest sales week for a woman in 2013, and the year's fourth-biggest sales week overall. It follows the No. 1 debuts of Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" (968,000), Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" (792,000) and Drake's "Nothing Was the Same" (658,000). (The last larger week for a woman was when Taylor Swift's "Red" debuted with 1.2 million at No. 1 upon its release in October 2012.)

As previously reported, iTunes announced that "Beyonce" tallied the largest sales week for an album in its U.S. iTunes Store, and was its fastest-selling title ever globally (828,773 sold worldwide through Dec. 15).

(To note: The music industry tracks weekly sales on a Monday through Sunday basis, hence why Beyonce's feat is being measured after only three days on sale.)

"Beyonce's" launch is also the second-largest digital sales week overall -- counting all digital retailers. It's second behind the debut frame of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," which sold 662,000 downloads in its first week. (That number was enhanced by Amazon MP3's decision to sell the set for 99-cents for two days during its first week. Billboard has estimated that Amazon MP3's 99-cent version resulted in 440,000 copies sold.)

"Beyonce" is only the second digital-only album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, following the 2010 all-star live charity album "Hope For Haiti Now." It debuted at No. 1 with 171,000 downloads sold, after no more than two full days on sale. (It was released on an off-cycle Saturday, Jan. 23, while the tracking week ended on Sunday, Jan. 25.) It spent a second week at No. 1, shifting 143,000 downloads in its first full week on sale.

The rest of the new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Expected top 10 arrivals include R. Kelly's new "Black Panties" and Childish Gambino's "Because the Internet."
