NAKED

45 years old.
Where did the time go?
It disappears with every heartbeat.

Now cancer?
I'm too young for this.
Is it spreading?
Will surgery stop it in time?

So little time to do the things I love.
Will it leave me impotent?
Incontinent?
Diminished in size and appearance?

Will my lover still find me attractive?
Will I still be able to satisfy her...grow old with her?
Will I see my children grown?

I've banked my life on my artistic talents.
At the end, will the work I have created dignify that choice
Or will it merely have been an excuse to not get a real job?

It has made uncertain all things I once took for granted
And left me
Naked.

***This is my contribution to the "Naked" show. The curator, Heidi "Bluegirl" challenged the artists to think beyond the typical idea of naked, or pretty pictures of nude girls, for this show. While my photos are not typical nudes, I thought that something that revealed more about the artist would be more apropos given the criteria of the exhibit. I am struck by how easy it is for the photographer to hide behind his photographs, which often reveal little to nothing about the artist. Even my photos, which are heavily conceptualized, styled, and directed by me, to the casual observer say more about the subject than they do about the artist. It is the subject that has taken the risk and is being revealed. I wanted to present a self-portrait that takes away the camera, clothes, and self-confidence that are my protection and reveals my "self". I wanted to present the vulnerability that I ask of my subjects and offer a portrait not only of my body but also of the fears that leave me truly "naked".
