After the final was over, I got to meet actors Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson. They were accompanied with their producer since they are making a movie here in Miami. They came to watch the match and they seem to enjoy tennis. All of them invited me to have dinner with them so I accepted the invitation. They are really great individuals and I had a great laugh with them. They are outgoing and very natural which I really liked. I am very communicative and I like when others are like that as well. I am attaching couple of pictures for all of you to see.

I am actually not in Miami right now; I came to Los Angeles today. The reason I came to California is that I have to meet with the architect in San Diego since my family is building the house in that area. I am only staying for couple of days and then I head back to Florida. I just came from shopping. I love to visit the Rodeo Drive and all the stores that are there.

Jankovic leads ACES Race | 10.04.2008.

MIAMI, FL, USA - At the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, the action off the court was just as exciting as the action on the court during the 12-day, Tier I event. At all Sony Ericsson WTA Tour events, players participate in many community programs and promotional activities to help raise awareness of the tournament and the game. In January 2007, the Tour began a new initiative called the ACES Race, rewarding those players who go above and beyond to promote tennis on and off the court. Points are awarded to each off-court promotional activity players take part in - the bigger the commitment, the more points awarded to each player.
Singles runner-up Jelena Jankovic took over the lead in the 2008 ACES Race, which tallies the off-court activities of the Tour players during the year. In reaching the singles final, Jankovic also spent time in photo shoots, fan and sponsor activities as well as dress fittings for the first-ever dress made of Sony Ericsson phones, which she wore on the red carpet at the Kick-Off Player Party.

Jelena Jankovic is a very successful tennis player, but she has often mentioned that tennis is not her only interest. Besides other things, she loves acting and Hollywood, and has even taken part in a Rebook Entertainment-produced TV show. She was also promised a role in one movie. We now know that Jelena took an acting class, and I suppose it’s not her last one.

Here’s what Jelena said on her blog:

Monday was so busy for me. Apart from practicing and All-Access Hour which is always scheduled at the beginning of the week, I had an acting class that I took part in. It was so much fun. It is always a good time when you do something to forget a bit about tennis, and relax your mind. It was only an hour long, but I was given several themes and at the beginning they gave me a task to be in certain situations and I really had to use my imagination. After that, I did variety of exercises in order to test me and see my acting potential.

I have no worries about Jelena Jankovic. I would like her to become even more successful in tennis, because she certainly hasn’t reached her top, but even if it doesn’t work out, she could make a living on various other things, and be happy. I see her as the type of person open to every new experience. (via Down the Line)

Q. You look exhausted. Is it for the match or what you have done after the match?
JELENA JANKOVIC: For both. I had a tough match, and I also, you know, I was drinking champagne and I put it on my face, and, you know, a lot of it went in my mouth, too.
But I'm just happy to win my title for the second time. It's a great feeling. I'm just enjoying it.

Q. You said it was a tough match. Didn't look tough from the stands, let's say.
JELENA JANKOVIC: To be honest, I was not playing good tennis. I was playing much better throughout the week.
And today I had an opponent who which I didn't know how she plays and I didn't know what to expect from her. She's a young player with great potential, and I just didn't know what she's going how she's going to play.
And, of course, she wasn't the favorite. I was the favorite and I had the pressure on me. I'm defending my title and I had to do it, so I'm glad I could, you know, cope with the pressure and win it for the second time.

Q. (From Italian) What did you tell Alize after the end of the match?
JELENA JANKOVIC: She was crying, and I know how it feels. I'm the same. It's just showing emotions, and nobody likes to lose. It's tough when you're in the final and you have an opportunity to win a big tournament and you don't.
So many emotions go through you body and mind. I told her that she played great throughout the week and had a great week and beat so many great players and she has a great future in front of her. She just has to keep going. Her time will come.

Q. She was crying, but a few minutes later you were crying also. You had some champagne in your eyes?
JELENA JANKOVIC: No, I was crying because I couldn't see and it was burning my eyes. But I'm the same. You know, I wanted to cry from happiness. But I tried to stay strong and not to show it to people, because I'm also very, very emotional. It's so hard for me to control everything, and I'm learning as years are going to deal with it better.
But just today was a great feeling, and I'm just so happy at the moment.

Q. How bad was the pain when you called the trainer?
JELENA JANKOVIC: I have still now like some, I don't know, with the

JELENA JANKOVIC: It's here. Some kind of tightness, and I had pain during the second set. I called for the trainer. She was doing some work and she was putting some cream so that I don't feel it. She did the best that she could for me to finish the match, and I'm happy for that.

Q. (From Italian) If you had woken up today with pain in your calf, what would you have done?
JELENA JANKOVIC: I don't know. I would go on the court and try to win my title again. I don't know, with one leg and with two arms and with one brain.

Q. Did you at any point today think that you might have to retire?
JELENA JANKOVIC: No. I was never thinking I was going to retire. It's a final, and, you know, for this kind of occasion sometimes you have pain and you don't feel so good, but you have fans that came to watch you play.
So many people are supporting you, at least you can try your best. If it's really, really so bad that you cannot walk and you cannot do anything, then you have to stop. But until that you have to try.

Q. You had in Rome your resurrection a few years ago, and then last year you won it. What it means this year? Are you going to Roland Garros thinking about yourself as a favorite since Henin is not there anymore, or not?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, she was the one that was my worst opponent last year on clay season. She was the only one I couldn't beat, and she was the one stopping me from winning many tournaments on clay, and some on hard as well. So now she's not playing anymore, so of course I have a bigger chance.
I'm playing well at the moment and I'm working with my new coach and he's teaching me so many things. I already see the improvement, which is great. I think I have a big opportunity to do very well in the French Open.

Q. Few weeks ago your mother told me that Strasbourg was one of your favorite tournaments, but you're not going to play this year. What are you going to do next week?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Actually tomorrow I'm going home to Serbia. I'm going to Belgrade, and I'm going to see my father and my younger brother and my older brother. I'll just relax for a few days and then start to train.
My physical condition coach is coming there, and, of course, my Spanish coach will be there with me. So I will do some preparation, and then a few days before the tournament in Paris I will go there and adapt. I'm going, you know, to do well there. We'll see.

Q. (From Italian) In tennis there are players who retire and players who lose and playing players like you who win the same tournament two years in a row. What are your objectives and your aim for the end of the year ranking?
JELENA JANKOVIC: My goal and dream is to become No. 1 in the world, and at the moment I think I'm on the right track. If I continue like this, I have a big chance.
I like playing on clay courts. I had a great clay court season last year, and then playing here and winning this tournament twice gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the tournaments.

Q. (From Italian) Does your victory here mean even more knowing that Djokovic won last week?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, it's great for Serbian tennis. I won it last year and this year again, and he won in the men's. It's just Serbian revolution. It's really great for Serbian tennis, and I'm so happy that we're doing so well.

Q. (From Italian) There have been comments in a magazine that came out in April commenting about your victory last year and saying how everyone in Rome wanted you to win again. Lea Pericoli, the former Italian champion, as you know, commented that both you and Djokovic are an example because you're not spoiled and very serious, calm, and professional, and that's why she and all the Roman public wanted you to win and were happy that both of you won here again. What do you think about those comments? Does to make you happy?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Thank you very much for those comments. We are trying our best. I think the Serbian tennis players I think we're trying our best to represent first of all our country in the best possible light, and represent ourselves, too.
Whenever we go on the court we try to be good role models and try to fight and try to win matches and also be very fair and professional. So I think it's great, and thank you for that.

Q. (From Italian) Cornet said she would have liked to have met you in the final because you're a fair and very good player.
JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, it's great to be a good tennis player and also be a good sportsman and play fair tennis. Because I think when you're on the court everybody wants to win, but as soon as we step off the court we're normal people and we have feelings and here we're human beings.

Vreme je za Pariz!

Zdravo moji najbolji fanovi,

Znam da se svaki put izvinjavam što vam nisam na vreme pisala, ali od turnira u Rimu, nisam imala prilike da sednem i malo odmorim. Sada je koncentracija na priprema za Roland Garros sledeće nedelje. Stigla sam kući u ponedeljak i od te večeri sam imala obaveze stalno. Kao što ste svi saznali, potpisala sam ugovor sa Knjaz Milošem gde ću promovisati Aqua Vivu. Mislim da ne treba da spominjem kako je to velika kompanija i da mi je velika čast sto ću raditi sa njima.

Da se osvrnem malo na turnir u Rimu jer sam i dalje pod utiskom odbrane titule. Mislim da sam igrala dobro i što je najbitnije napredovala u različitim segmentima igre. To mi daje dosta samopouzdanja jer kada morate da igrate Grand Slam turnir, važno je biti na visini zadatka dve nedelje da biste na kraju slavili. Ove nedelje sam dosta radili na tehnici i kondiciji sa moja dva trenera. U petak svi putujemo za Pariz gde ću početi pomalo da odmaram i spremam za mečeve. Svaki dan sam trenirala 4-5 sati. Prehlada mi još nije prošla jer nije bilo vremena za odmor ali se bolje osećam. Učestvovaću i u zenskom dublu a partnerka će mi biti Ana Čakvetadze. Nikada nismo igrale zajedno ali videćemo kako ćemo se slagati na terenu.

Kao što sam već spomenula, postala sam promoter najbolje srpske vode. Slogan kampanje je “Još jači” i sigurna sam da kao tim cemo dogurati daleko. U utorak smo imali pres konferenciju, a juče sam imala snimanje za marketinšku kampanju. Neću da otkrivam još ništa, videćete uskoro o čemu pričam. Danas sam snimala video klip za finale Eurovizije. Obavezno gledajte u subotu posle 21h, obratiću vam se na par jezika. Takođe ne zaboravite da glasate za Jelenu Tomasević.

Vreme je da idem i spakujem se, sutra pre podne putujemo za Pariz. Jedva čekam da stignem, super sam igrala prošle godine tamo i nadam se da će biti još bolje ove godine. Poželite mi sreću i gledajte me sledeće dve nedelje.

The face of Serbia returns from ruin

Jelena Jankovic struts across the floor in a shimmering red dress and high heels, her huge grin and jabbering apologies briefly hiding one of the best excuses yet heard for being a couple of hours late. The woman now ranked at No3 in world tennis has just flown in from Belgrade where, despite her amusing story about flight delays, it emerges that she has just attended the launch of a Serbian stamp.

"It's really a cool thing," Jankovic says, "to have a stamp with my face on it. Now, when people want to post a letter they can stick my face on the envelope. It's quite an honour for me. I think people in Serbia appreciate that coming from a small country without any tennis tradition and becoming one of the best in the world is a big achievement."

Jankovic flashes her dazzling smile at the prospect of her fame in Serbia growing even more outrageous. Having just won yet another significant title on the Sony Ericsson circuit, with victory on Sunday in Rome, Jankovic approaches next week's French Open with a serious chance of her first grand slam title. "I've played three grand slam semis already - at the US Open, in Australia and last year at the French. Each time I lost to the player that won the tournament. Last year, after Justine Henin, I was the second best player on clay and normally we had tight matches and it would be 7-5 in the third. But I was awful in the French semi. I lost 6-2, 6-2. But now I want to get to the final and, if I do, I can win."

After Henin succumbed to the relentless demands of the circuit and retired unexpectedly last week at the age of 25 the ascendancy of the intelligent and charming Jankovic would be the best antidote to accusations that women's tennis is being numbed by its anonymous gaggle of young professionals who seem bereft of any distinctive personality. Her journey from Belgrade has been as tumultuous as it is intriguing and it would have been a terrible loss if she had carried out her threat to quit tennis for university two years ago in Rome. Having lost nine out of her first 10 matches in 2006, Jankovic admits that, "I was just miserable. I got depressed and couldn't recover.

I would go on court with my face down - which was not like me. It's hard enough losing once - but nine times in a row!

"I called my mum and told her, 'I cannot do this any more. I'm going to hang my racket on the wall and I'll study and just be a normal girl.' On the phone I was crying and my mum said, 'I'm coming to Rome and you have to start being positive. You have to believe in yourself.' I had constantly put myself down. I kind of ruined myself."

Rome, in May 2006, changed everything. Jankovic met her mother, Snezana, which means 'Snow White' in Serbian, and a modern fairytale unfolded. "In the first round in Rome I was up by a set and 5-2. I was looking at the scoreboard and at my mum and I couldn't believe it. I felt the scoreboard was wrong. Maybe it got stuck? I hadn't been in that situation for half a year. But I won that match and I was so happy you cannot imagine. You'd think I'd won the biggest tournament of my career. That was the turn-around."

Having now won successive Italian titles the 23-year-old Jankovic can reflect on her even more testing introduction to the game. She was nine-and-a-half before she picked up a racket for the first time - an astonishingly late age in a sport overrun by precocious teenagers. At first tennis lessons merely took place alongside her piano tuition before, when political sanctions hardened in Belgrade, the cost of living soared. "I had to cut back on one activity. So my parents asked me, 'Which do you enjoy more?' I wanted tennis. I don't know how this happened but after six months people were saying, 'She is the best Serbian girl we have ever seen.' My parents never took it seriously because their No1 priority was education."

But those who believed in Jankovic's natural ability persisted and eventually, just before her 13th birthday, she went to America - and Nick Bollettieri's academy. "I didn't know a word of English. My mum would sometimes come and stay and then she would leave because she had to go back to work. Those days when she left - [Jankovic makes a soft exclamation of pain] - were very hard. I was very shy and introverted. I became so closed in myself because I was in a different country, with a different language. My mum would cry and I'd cry too. I would say, 'I want to come home. I feel very lonely.' And this was especially true because the other girls could be very hard. "When I was 14 the war started, with the bombing of Serbia, and I'd be in America, watching on TV. They bombed this building and that one, and my parents were there, and they'd lose electricity and have to go in the cellar. I couldn't take it. But I also knew I wanted to play my sport and when I was on court I would forget everything else."

One of Jankovic's rivals at the academy was Maria Sharapova. "I don't remember who was beating who but we were competitive. There was cheating..."

Jankovic breaks into her jangling laugh. "I remember those balls close to the line. She would never give them to me. I don't think I was cheating. But as kids we were doing so many things just to win matches. Now, when I look back, I want to laugh."

She shrugs when asked if Sharapova is more amiable now. "Not really. She is more on her own, with her team. She is not speaking to many players - if anyone."

Jankovic is different: "I have this philosophy that when I go on court we are opponents. But afterwards we can drink coffee and laugh together. Not many girls have that attitude. I like to have a good time. Some of the girls, their life is only tennis. It is my education that it is good manners to at least say 'good morning' or 'hello, how are you doing?' Many players don't even want to say hello. It's just pure arrogance - acting like they're God's gift. It's not nice. Even if you're famous and quite a successful athlete, you still have to respect everybody and be a nice girl."

Her appealing nature was evident last year at Wimbledon when Jankovic and Jamie Murray won the mixed doubles title while sparking a media frenzy over whether or not they were smitten with each other. She laughs helplessly at the memory. "His agent asked me to play with Jamie and I didn't know who he was. I only knew Andy Murray. And then they started these rumours saying that, 'Oh, Jelena has a soft spot for Jamie'. But how can I like someone when I don't even know who he is? And then when we started playing we were suddenly these lovebirds. There were all these articles - 'love is in the air'! I just went with the flow.

"We had good chemistry. From the start we felt good next to each other. We were laughing, playing good tennis and all of a sudden we're in the final on Centre Court and I'm like 'woah! We have a chance to win Wimbledon'. That was when I got really excited. But that's all. I just like him as a friend. He's a very nice guy, with a good personality, and he's quite humble. I've met a lot of guys on tour and he's one of the nicest. When we see each other we laugh together. I'm also a person who puts things straight. Maybe he likes me and there's nothing wrong with liking somebody. But I don't want to be involved with tennis players. There are so many great-looking guys on tour but I don't want to go watch my boyfriend play tennis."

Jankovic is candid when describing the complexities of her personal life. "My boyfriend used to be a basketball player but now he's finished university and he's involved in business. So he's quite intelligent; he speaks five languages. But the long-distance thing is hard. We have been in this relationship two-and-a-half years - with some breaks in between. But if you like each other and you understand your priorities, it can work. I have had to say to him: 'At the moment my No1 priority is my career.'"

In less romantic terms would she consider playing with Murray at Wimbledon this year? "I would love to do that. But we'll see. It is hard on your body. You get exhausted, especially with all the rain in London, waiting around and then playing your singles and then mixed. We had so much fun together but my goal is to win the singles at Wimbledon. That is my No1 priority. And you know, if I did it, Serbia would go really crazy!"
