Tom McGrath, the director of the film, which opens on Friday, said he was inspired by the Hungarian inventor Tesla’s unsuccessful battles over the commercialization of electricity. “I was always interested in the story of Tesla versus Edison and how Nikola Tesla was vilified by Thomas Edison in a way,” Mr. McGrath said.
“He had all of these talents,” he added, “but was kind of an oddball and very obscure. There are small flavors of Tesla in the character of Megamind.”
