The IFPI, which represents 1,400 companies in 72 countries, estimated more than 40 billion music files were illegally shared in 2008. There were 1.4 billion single tracks legally downloaded in 2008.
Ninety-five per cent of music downloaded online is illegal. There has, however, been a 25% rise since last year with downloads now accounting for a fifth of all recorded music sales. The IFPI said worldwide music market revenues shrank by 7% last year. This was blamed on falling CD sales, while the increase in digital sales failed to make up for this.
2009: Illegal music downloaders buy 10 times as much legal music as non-illegal downloaders. Such is the claim from a Norwegian study. New data suggests that people who illegally download music are more likely to buy music from legitimate sources than are God-fearing, non-illegally downloading folks.
Combined physical and digital album sales are reflective of this trend. They have declined steadily every year since 2006, when 588.2 million units were moved, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Only 326.2 million albums were sold in 2010.

Britons downloaded 1.2 billion digital music tracks this year, the BPI claimed, as it produced research showing online piracy is still growing. The industry body said just under three out of every four tracks downloaded in 2010 were illegally acquired, citing a report it commissioned from the market research company Harris Interactive. That is more than the entire number of individual tracks ever to be downloaded legally in the UK to date, which stands at about 1bn, according to the BPI. Digital services accounted for 24.5% of UK record industry revenue in September 2010 – up from 19.2% a year earlier.
MusicMetric monitors the global activity of BitTorrent files and discovered that during the first half of 2012, 43 million albums and singles were illegally downloaded in the UK.

Nisam uspeo da nađem podatke za 2011, a baš me zanima kako je Adele prošla.
